On the road again...

Sunday May 11th - There are so many places to visit around this part of the world - so we set off to take a look. First we went to Bitburg - local beer distillers, good one at that. The town is modern and neat and tidy but thats about all you can say for it - so we moved on. Next stop was Trier - and that was far more successful. It is a very old town situated on the Mosel and the architecture was to die for. There was a lovely atmosphere, fuelled by the fact that it was a Sunday so people were out to people watch and walk the walk, as well as wine and dine. We did both and were very satisfied with the result. The weather was baking hot in the town centre - must have touched 30c and that made us tired. After a walk around the streets and much picture taking and sight seeing we had lunch at a hotel on the square and chatted to another Brit couple over for a long weekend. After that we found a tourist bus/train that did the tour of the town in the shade and explained everything - for example did you know that Karl Marx was born in Trier and his house is open for visitors now. There is also a massive Roman gate to the city which was originally white but has blackened over time and is known as the Black Gate - pic included. After that we decided to revisit the huge catholic church which holds the gown of Christ (allegedly) - it was extremely beautiful. We were very tired after all that so made our way home.

We have made a decision that each Sunday will be our treat day and we will dine out with a local Sunday lunch - whatever that may be in whatever country we are in.

After a lovely meal we took a stroll by the nearby river and went back to watch the next episode of Rome before turning in.
