Luxembourg this time
Still on catch up with the blog as the days are going so quickly and they are so full of things to do. Thankfully our Dodo Travel Log, given to us as a present by Ann, John and Luke enable us to write everything down so that we have all the correct information to use in the blog. Thank you guys - it has proved to be invaluable.
So - 14th May we decided to do Luxembourg as we are so conveniently placed in this area to visit any one of 3 countries. The road network is so good as well and as this was a Holy day the roads were frighteningly quiet - take a look at the picture of the motorway - and that was 1pm on a public holiday. Imagine what the M25 and M1 would look like at the same time!
En route we stopped off at Vianden which was labelled on our road atlas as a place of interest - also a present from Don and Barbs and also invaluable - thank you guys too. It did not fail to impress - set in a valley with the Mosel river running through it and flanked by steep forests with a beautiful chateau perched on top. There were cable cars from the village to the top to view the chateau but we stopped and had a coffee in the sunshine and just took it all in - see the pic of that too.
Then on to Luxembourg via an extremely picturesque route on the motorway. It was mostly closed due to the Holy Day but all the tourist spots and cafes were open of course which suited us well. We could easily walk around with less crowds to contend with. Tourist Information gave us a walking map of the city taking in all the relevant landmarks and that took us about 1.5 hours - stopping halfway to lunch in St Willems Square in the shade of the trees as a bit of respite from the heat. We later had a beer in Place d'Armes in front of the Royal Palace at the Cafe de Paris.
Steve was very impressed to find a huge underground multi storey car park - actually under the main town itself - he thought that would have been good in Wandsworth too! but thats a past life ha ha. We were pleased to find that the diesel was a lot cheaper in Luxembourg as well - equal to £1.00 per litre - so we filled up while we could at that price.
On the way home took the wrong turning from the motorway and basically got lost - no problems though as we had all the time in the world and a full tank of fuel. It caused us to see some beautiful woodland and small roads through the forest and little villages so it turned out to be a happy accident - serendipity. Even in out of the way places we found the roads to be of excellent quality - Steve wanted me to add that to the blog as he was so impressed!
