Maastricht today

After a good nights sleep in Essie we set off to Maastricht by car - only 10 klm - but we parked outside to ride the bikes through the centre as it is more bike friendly than car friendly. The day was hot and sunny again and we really enjoyed the cycle ride in, parked the bikes and went to the Tourist Information to collect info on the old town before going further. We picked up a tour map of the old town and decided to fuel ourselves further before setting off on the 1.5 hour walk in the sun. So we sat by the River Maas at a cafe and drank the local beer - the picture is of the brewery on one side of the river and we sat at the other side drinking it! We had a lovely lunch and really enjoyed the walk around the old town - the history is exceptional and we can recommend the place for a visit.

Exhausted but happy we cycled back to the car and decided to visit Valkenburg as it is highlighted on our map (thank you Don and Barbara for the map) as a place of interest. It was a pretty village with a ruined castle as its claim to fame - and about 100 eateries to support that fame! Not for us but still pretty - a ruin is a ruin after all!

Tired and happy we returned to Essie and had a sit and a read for a while before preparing our evening meal - a stir fry of all the veg we have left plus some meat we bought at a supermarket yesterday. We thought it was chopped ham at the time - we know now that it wasn't - but we don't know what it was. It went down well though - with Yellowtail Shiraz.

A wonderful day and now we are planning for tomorrow - should we venture into Germany and visit Aachen? or should we go into Belgium - or maybe stay in Holland. The questions continue.... We will let you know.
