Going south

We moved on further south in Italy towards Umbria today. It was an easy journey along the A1 autostrada and as we approached the campsite our spirits lifted to see the beautiful Italy that we had anticipated. This is much better!

We have come to a campsite on the edge of Lake Trasimeno which meant little to us until we arrived. It is absolutely beautiful - a wildlife sanctuary and a part of the country that the Italians take great pride in. It is very tidy with lots of hilltop villages and towns, all with their own castle and huge church. The food produced here is heaven in a bag - and a bottle. They collect truffles, kill wild boar in the woods that they make gorgeous salami and ham with. The olive trees produce oils that they flavour with everything imaginable and the balsamic vinegar is the best quality. The cheeses are also flavoured with everything from truffle to olive wood ash.

This campsite is much more comfortable and prettier than the last one. We were lucky enough to grab a pitch immediately in front of a little beach by the side of the lake and with a lagoon behind us. There are lots of reeds to the side of the lake in which many birds and ducks nest and swim.

After we set up camp we went to a nearby village to buy some food, then relaxed by the lake. This is going to be a great few days visiting Perugia, Assisi and maybe more depending on how we feel.
